Heaven and Hell at Studio One, Oakland

This Thursday, December 13, my drawing Heaven and Hell will be exhibited as part of the Studio One Portrait/Self Portrait show in Oakland, CA. The reception runs from 7:30-9:30 pm, and the show runs through December. I currently have large (20" x 17"), gorgeous fine art digital prints of this piece on high-quality rag paper for sale at my Etsy site. It is an excellent bargain!

Miss Lonelyhearts, Scene Report

On another note, my drawing Heaven and Hellwill be exhibited in the Portrait/Self-Portrait show at Studio One in Oakland from December 1 through early January. This Saturday, December 3rd, I will exhibit some of my larger drawings at the Wonderlands/Chillin Holiday Show at Mezzanine (San Francisco), which runs from 8pm-2am. There will be a ton of DJs, a fashion show, and live painting, and you must be 21 or older.

A few days ago Dylan Williams passed away. He was a champion for cartoonists everywhere, from half-forgotten Golden Age illustrators, to teenagers self-publishing their first mini-comic. Through first Puppy Toss, and then through his Sparkplug Comic Books he published and distributed the work of many, many emerging cartoonists. He was an iconoclastic artist who always made work to please himself instead of just doing what was popular. He was a man of great conviction. And for several years he was the Laverne to my Shirley.

Please consider ordering books from Sparkplug or purchasing work from the Dylan Williams benefit auctions to help Dylan's wife Emily with his medical costs. We are also planning a Bay Area memorial in the upcoming weeks.

I have posted a few of my photos of Dylan at my Flickr site, and I would love to see more from people who knew him in the 1990's.

Floating World Comics Benefit for Dylan Williams

Re-post from Floating World Comics: Dylan Williams would never ask any of his friends to do a benefit like this. Not his style. Sorry Dylan, I know you said no gifts, but your friends love you too much and you’re just going to have to accept this present.

A few days ago Tom Spurgeon and others sent out a call for people to support Dylan by buying Sparkplug Comic Books. When I heard how serious the situation was I felt shock and sadness. Felt a little helpless, then I think yesterday we all got the same idea at the same time. Gotta do something to help our friend. Jim Rugg emailed me last night about putting together an art fundraiser show which I’ll start organizing this weekend and I’ll have more info on Monday.

In the meantime we’re going to have a benefit sale at Floating World next Monday and Tuesday, August 29th – 30th.

We’re going to donate 100% of our proceeds from those two days to Dylan’s medical care. We’ll have a special section of Sparkplug books for you to check out but the sale includes everything you buy on Monday and Tuesday.

I started a new series of drawings with a feral child theme. I don't like how the bone pile looks. I'm not sure if its the shadow, the shape, the composition of it, or all three. what do you think?

Here is the first mask painting after the second session. Once its really dry, most of the rest will be done with layers of glazing.

Lately I've been working with chaep plastic Halloween masks from the 1960's-80's that I've collected. Now I'm starting my first painting in what I hope to be a series. This first one is supposed to be a gypsy. I remember these well! Here's the results of the first session, the underpainting, which was done over an orange-red acrylic ground. The rest will be in oils. I'm going to let the underpainting dry for a few days before I start modeling the mask more.

As part of Miss Stacey's Summer School, I am working on a portrait of my mother and aunts. It is based on an old snapshot taken as they left to see the Beach Boys in Hollywood. The medium is oil on canvas.

At the first painting session I sketched out the figures and painted the faces. My goal was to capture a close likeness without overworking too much.

At the second session I focused on hair and clothing. I'm not quite sure about the background yet.
